Anybody else feel a special affinity with Gaetano? While so many characters are likeable, I think Gaetano is especially interesting. Characters such as him give depth to the story, since he is from the "enemy" family and unattractive, yet so well-mannered, kind, etc. His affection for Francesca seems puzzling at first, however, since in the first book she was a fairly two-dimensional twit. When she comes to help Niccolo care for Falco, we do see another dimension, which then helps us to understand Gaetano's love for her. But until then, there hasn't been much to make Francesca seem worthy of this young man's attention.

I'm not quite sure of the etiquette here, having never taken part in an online forum before, but I hope it is OK for the creator of Gaetano and Francesca to add a comment.
You are right; Francesca was two dimensional in COM. That is, I had not fully realised her and she was just a tool. But by the second book, as soon as i realsied that Gaetano was in love with her, I had to discover who she was. this was quite late in the day, because Gaetano and falco were not originally going to be in the book. They just turned up, bringing their characters with them.
Gaetano is part-inspired by Lorenzo il Magnifico (de' Medici) and Falco was born out of a description given by Giuseppe Tommasi di Lampedusa (who wrote The Leopard - great novel) of his lonely childhood roaming the vast emptiness of his family's palaces (see epigraph).
Also I have two distant cousins, boys, born ten years apart, who are devoted brothers and one of them broke his leg very badly.
Hope this is interesting to you; feel free to boot me off if I am out of order

I agree that Gaetano is a wonderful and interesting character and i think it's especially interesting to see him as Georiga sort of does in COS, as an extremely nice person but coming from a family that she has always been taught to consider as her enemies. I think that the beautiful bond between Falco and Gaetano is wonderful but i wish it were so more often inreal life between siblings. I find Georgia's predicament with Russel, though extreme, to be far more realisitc today. No, it's great to have the actual author on the website. In fact, it's totally cool! I agree that it's wonderful to have the author in on the discussion! I, too, really like the bond between Gaetano and Falco and find it realistic in the context. These two were brought up as noblemen, albeit in the malevolent diChimici family, so they were taught to be courteous and considerate of one another. The tragedy of Falco's injury and their subsequent separation have probably strengthened their affection for each other. Imagine this story if these two boys had not walked into it! The relationship between Georgia and Russell, unfortunately, is realistic, too. Fortunately most siblings I know are not nearly that hostile!

I totally agree. However, i must lay down that i love Luciano and that he is completely my favourite character without any question. It's not just that he's so evidently gorgeous but that he's so nice and so utterly unlike any boy you would ever meet in the real world. Do you know what I mean? xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Yes, I do understand! Luciano must be a favorite of almost every reader, so my comments about other characters are aside from our natural love of Luciano! I like Cesare, also. I feel bad for him at times, since he is not part of the brotherhood of Stravaganti. But I see him as very good-looking, too, and certainly he is highly skilled as a rider. These books have plenty of young, attractive, NICE guys, don't they?

That's funny... I don't think of Luciano as perfect. But I guess he might be a good role model for real-life guys... Will we see Cesare in Book 3? My guess is yes. The plots and characters are so closely intertwined in the first two books that I expect he'll find a place in the third. Wonder what Mary Hoffman has to say about this...

Well James, I hate to admit it, but he does kind of bring up the bar for you guys in the real world, hes such an angel(hearts) I think hes so sweet, ecpecialy because hes so devoted to arian, Kind of like the ducessa(probably spelled wrong) and Redalfo, the book shares a lot of similaritys between the 2 couples.
Sorry to bring up the bar mate! But ya gotta love Luciano, and you cannot possibly tell me that Ariana doesnt make you drool just the tinciest bit, she is after all, the ducessa.

hmmmm, i know what you mean. I don't personally because i am not a horsey person and a bit too load to really be like her but she is sill a very sweet character. It's also good to have a FEMALE stravaganate though there's meant to be that sculptor woman in giglia, miele. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
