Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke, first of the Sally Lockhart Quartet, is being adapted onto TV and the lead role goes to.... BILLIE PIPER!!!!!!!! Good or bad? She better learn a proper RP accent in this. Sally doesn;t speak as a thingyney

Woah! I like Billie Piper a lot, I think she's great in Dr Who, but Sally...... hmmm.... I can't really see it right now, but I guess it'll probably fit once it's on-screen. Wow, very interesting...

yeah, i heard about this a while ago.... i'm in two minds......see....I was, i confess, very much won over by piper in dr who, coz i really thought she was great.....but....she's just SO not how i imaginied sally....i mean, not trying to be mean.....billie's not exactly much of a looker is she?....
Hmmm, any clue about the rest of the cast? I reckon Rupert Penry-Jones from Spooks would be a BRILLIANT Frederick. Thoughts? xoxoxooxoxoxoxoxoxxoxoxoxoxo

I've finally decided to pick up this book again... I once got just to chapter 3, and then something else happened in my life and I left it to one side.
I've got back into reading it. And I'm halfway through and I love it!
I'm not sure about Billie Piper... it could work but I totally agree that she'd have to work on the accent! *lol*

I did just the same thing, I read part of it, got distracted and picked it up again bout 2 years ago and loved it! I don't think Billie Piper's that bad-looking, but I have to admit, she isn't my idea of pretty determined Sally Lockhart..... ( I sound like the blurb from a book)!

a little too old for Sally anyway. She's meant to be 16 in Ruby in the Smoke. Unless they upped her age in order to film the next books if this adaptation is successful

Yeah..she is uh- a tad old I'll agree. You could be right, Lavita. I hope they do make the other books too! I will watch it eagerly if it does make it onto TV. *remembers she needs to finish reading Ruby in the Smoke* Ooops...

I just went out and bought the last three books, and I liked The Shadow In The North best, despite sad ending (pullman likes to do that, doesn't he? It's really annoying!!!). I thought the last one was a bit odd cos suddenly you drop Sally completely, apart from about five pages, and go onto Jim and Adelaide (who has reappeared ten years with a completely new personality). It's bit out of the blue, really, though quite good.
Actually, it would be interesting seeing Billie playing Sally in the next books, as there's more emotion and stuff, and I'd like to see her acting in it.

i was disappointed with Sally not being mcuh in Tin Princess but give the poor gal a break eh! She can't go long without some danger or other thrown in her face!
Still not happy with Billie Piper though...

The poor gal's the heroine of an action novel, she's got to have danger thrown in her face! Otherwise it wouldn't work, would it? If Sally sits at home and drinks her tea, it wouldn't be a very good novel. if she was getting tired of all the fame, she should have let the series finish at book 3! Yep, just looked it up on the BBC website, and they have the most awful picture of Billie Piper on there. Eeesh....
