Well maybe I'm biased. I've fallen in love with firefly (and I dare you, after watching it, not to) - the deep characters, the emotions, the minor conflicts - You saying that the characters were not well acted, well, pains me. But then again, like I said I'm biased. To tell the truth, I don't think that the film lived up to the rest of the firefly verse - All of the relationships between the crew members, all of the individual nuances that make up a character were skipped over to try and squeeze it into the 2 hours. But I loved it for being a continuation of the 'verse which I love so much, I loved it because, as a fan, I've invested so much time and effort getting this film made - the series was canceled after 11/14 episodes, so getting this film made shows EXTRODAINary dedication on many of the fans parts - particuarly, as they were originally aired out of order, which meant that the original number of people who saw the series was miniscule. I love it because we see the characters develop at bit, 6 months on from the end of firefly - And FINALLy simon managing to say the right thing to kaylee - even though it did come across as very trite and cute and scripted. He finally managed not to piss her off. I loved seeing river finally settled a bit more. I loved seeing how river originally escaped from the academy. As a hook for the firefly series, It wasn't brilliant. I coerced 6 friends to come and see it with me, and their reactions were similar to yours. A typical action movie. Sci-fi. Cheesy lines. Token subplot romance. Suitable final gun battle. Token deaths. I'm lending out the DVDs to my friends, one a week, and I'm converting each of them in turn. Everyone who has had the DVDs loves it. Its the realtionships that make firefly what it is. All the realtionships. The almost father/daughter reationship Mal has with kaylee. The mutal respect relationship between jayne and shepard - as unbelivably diffrent as they can be, working out together. The achingly sad, scarificial, beautiful beautiful BEATIFUL tear wrenchingly devoted realtionship Simon has with River - Unbeliveably self sacrificing - the kind of realtionship that makes you feel inadequete and at the same time gives you faith in the world again. yet barely touched upon in the film. The sweet, sisterly, motherly relationship between kaylee and inara. Jayne - a man who would sell out river and simon for enough money - a cold hearted, traitor of a mercanary, yet still imensly loyal to the captain at the same time, and the proud wearer of an orange knitted wooly bobble hat his mum made for him. The comradship between zoe and mal - trusting each other unquestioningly to the death... Wash and Zoe. Bickering, jelousy, sex, teasing, cute moments... they have a real marriage. Almost everyone loves their relationship - because it's realistic. it's a real marriage between two imperfect people, who nevertheless love each other. There are so many, and I can't even start to go into them all. I think that you would like firefly. it's slower paced, slightly less action, much less 'predictable' and the focus is entirely on the characters. beg, borrow or steal a copy of the DVDs. Please. just trust me on this one. I may have questionable taste in other things, but firefly is my love child. And I heart Serenity. plzkthnx.
