Agreed..Flying Dutchman was better than Angel's command..because you didn't know what to expect in FD and in AC there was some vague notion of the hero disappearing to nothing again

I agree, Ben leaving everybody behind was more poignant in Castaways, because it was the first time. In Angel's Command, it almost happened too often, and it just didn't have the same effect on me. I did like the passage at the end describing the painting of him though, that was very good.
I'm halfway through another fantasy book now, which is almost a cross between Lord of the Rings and Tamora Pierce's series. It's called The Gift, bu Alison Croggon, and it's very good so far.

Hello, everybody!
I'm just checking out all the threads (obviously very bored) and trying to get rid of that 'New Stravagante' 1 star, and here I found something I can answear to!
To begin with, my fav. books (this is going to be long): Lord of the Rings, His dark materials, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl, Stravaganza, Earth's children, Da Vinci code, Angels and demons, Hardy boys, Bob Morane, Strandanornir, Ekkert að...-trio, Sogbletturinn, Spor í myrkri and Peð á plánetunni jörð (the last five are all icelandic so you probably haven't heard about it).
My name: Ragna Ólöf Guðmundsdóttir. 'Ragna' is a female version of the male name 'Ragnar' and Ragnar means a soldier...I have no idea what Ólöf means but Guðmundur, well, Guð- = God and -mund = a hand, so it could be God's hand but then a again there are many names that begin with Guð- (Guðjón, Guðlaugur, Guðrún, Guðbjörg I could count forever...(Guðmunds(dóttir = daughter of Guðmundur, my dad's name is Guðmundur) oh man, this is more complicated than I thought...I'm getting dizzy so I'm leaving it right there...

The Gift was good, although it did seem that the author was trying to emulate Tolkien's style of writing a bit too hard... A quick summary... Maerad is a slave girl but she is found to have special powers- a Gift. She is a Bard and a prophecy revolves around her. She and her new teacher are attacked by Hulls (Dark Bards) and other monstrous creatures on their quest to find the truth.
RÓG; I recognise or have read most of the books you recommend, although not the the Icelandic ones! I haven't heard of Bob Morane though. What does he write?

Bob Morane is a book character, but he, as well as the author Henri Vernes, is french. Probably not publsihed where ever you live or stopped being published (it was popular when my dad was a kid) It's pretty much like the Hardy boys, a little more violent, maybe...

I too tend to stick to fantasy, although I do read historical books, mostly about ancient civilisations, because I love that! I do get moaned at though for not reading a variety of genres, but I do! Fantasy's just the most prevalent.
For example, ne of my favourite books, is 'The Edge' by Alan Gibbons, it's all about racial tensions in a small town estate, and it is excellent- and not fantasy!
I just finished Eragon, by Christopher Paolini (which is fantasy though) any one else read it? I did enjoy it, and when the next volume is released I'll read it, but I don't think I'll preorder it or anything like that.

Has anyone read any of the following -'Noughts and Crosses' and 'Knife Edge' by Malorie Blackman -'The Wicca Series' by Cate Teirnan or in America 'The Sweeps Series' (not entirely sure how to spell her name) -'Tales of the Otori' by a person -some other stuff that i can't think of right now?

Well...some other stuff you can't think of right now, yeah, maybe but I don't know...I haven't read any of those you mentioned but the title 'The Wicca series' sounds familiar but that's all...
